David Emanuel meets RRS Sir David Attenborough – world-famous fashion designer pays special visit to Cammell Laird
Renowned fashion designer David Emanuel brought a touch of celebrity glamour to Cammell Laird this week.
The Welshman, best known for co-designing the wedding dress worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1981, was given a tour of the shipyard and an opportunity to see shipbuilding and ship repair first hand. The visit was arranged following a chance encounter with Paul Coles, Cammell Laird technical manager.
David became fascinated when Paul explained that shipbuilders ‘dressed welds’, which got them talking. Paul went on to explain a ship is ‘dressing overall’ when international maritime signal flags are flown on a ship from stemhead to masthead, from masthead to masthead (if the vessel has more than one mast) and then down to the taffrail.
Paul went further by explaining that Cammell Laird is constructing its own David in the yard just now – RRS Sir David Attenborough, one of the most advanced polar research vessels in the world. David felt compelled to see whether we really were competing in his fashion world.
The wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles was watched by an estimated 750 million people and instantly made David a household name. His celebrity status was reinforced when he participated in I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2013. He is currently the host and creative director for the TLC flagship show Say Yes to the Dress UK.
Paul said: “David really enjoyed his visit, even taking time out to have a question and answer session with some of the Cammell Laird team. David declared RRS Sir David Attenborough a design icon. Everyone involved in hosting enjoyed discussing the nature of ‘design’ and the process of ‘creation’ during the tour.
“We can only hope that, in the near future, our overalls for the shipyard will carry the prestigious label of ‘designed by David Emanuel’!”
