Supplier spotlight: Partnership brings unique opportunities and record turnover for Vigo IT
Vigo IT, based in Birkenhead, is an IT services provider working through the Wirral, Liverpool, Chester and the North West. It provides a variety of services including network installation, hardware sales, IT security and strategy, and website hosting, to name a few. The business can design or upgrade a new IT system from start to finish, whether a client needs a single laptop or 100 computers.
As a Cammell Laird supplier, Vigo has been able to grow its team and its expertise thanks to the relationship that has formed between the two organisations. Cammell Laird got in touch in March 2017 to explore how an IT support service could complement its own small in-house team. Vigo’s head of operations, Tom Barbat, and David Williams, the then business development director at Cammell Laird, worked closely together over the months that followed, designing a wrap-around support package that would seamlessly blend Vigo’s service desk support with the existing team.
The aim of the partnership was to bring significant improvements in operational efficiency, task and job management as well as service traceability, reporting and oversight.
In June 2017, after the rollout of the first project, Vigo was asked to quote for a server system refresh and for desktop computer upgrades, including Windows 10. By September that year, the business was starting work on the Windows 10 desktop project, and the two organisations have worked closely ever since.
Today, Vigo manages all Cammell Laird’s IT services alongside the in-house team, as well as offering support to maintain compliance to Cyber Essentials Plus and MOD standards. The partnership has created a number of opportunities for Vigo to grow, as well as safeguarding the jobs of all 13 of its employees. It has achieved £1m turnover for the first time in its history thanks to the contract. The business has also employed an additional member of staff on its project team and another on its service desk, with plans to recruit another service desk analyst and an apprentice later in 2019.
There have been other valuable benefits. “Over the years we have worked together with Cammell Laird in a spirit of collaboration and cooperation, which has developed and deepened our trusted partner relationship,” says Kurt Beaumont-Jones, owner of Vigo IT. “We work with Cammell Laird based on trust, delivering genuine value to both of our businesses – for Cammell Laird this means increased efficiency of their IT support services and better user satisfaction levels and for Vigo, exceeding our customers’ expectations and referrals/recommendations are what our business continues to grow by.”
Then there has been the chance to grow its knowledge, both of the public defence sector and in software such as CAD programmes.
“Supporting Cammell Laird through the Cyber Essentials Plus certification and ongoing compliance activities has allowed us to develop a service model to roll this out as an additional paid for support service for our other clients,” Beaumont-Jones says.
There have been other stand-out moments, including the chance to be present, along with other suppliers, at the official launch ceremony of the RSS Sir David Attenborough in July 2018 in the presence of Sir David himself.
“We feel very proud to be the trusted IT partner to such a high-profile and prestigious client, and that pride is felt by all staff, whether they are directly involved or not,” Beaumont-Jones adds. “Working as a supplier to Cammell Laird has brought about increased visibility and reputation for Vigo IT across the Mersey Maritime membership as a whole and more opportunities to speak about our services and our business to members.
“Moreover, the requirements for additional security checks on linked staff has brought greater peace of mind and the ability to be able to promote security check compliance to other potential clients.”
