Cammell Laird – committed to ensuring equal opportunities for all

posted on July 30, 2019 categories Recruitment

Although Cammell Laird has gone through many periods of change in its near 200-year history, our talented and highly skilled workforce has always been one of the company’s biggest assets. We employ up to 1,000 people directly and indirectly, and each and every individual plays a key role in helping Cammell Laird thrive as a cutting-edge engineering services specialist.

Building a workforce that is fully representative of the community it serves is vitally important, which is why Cammell Laird is fully committed to ensuring equal opportunities for all. We want to provide high value jobs for local people who above all have the right attitude and mindset – people who can take the business forward, regardless of age, sex, race, disability, pregnancy, marital status, sexual orientation, gender reassignment or religious background.

Demonstrating our commitment to equality is an essential step towards creating a fully diverse workforce. We run one of the biggest apprenticeship courses in the region, providing young people from an array of backgrounds the opportunity to become the engineers of the future.

We’re actively involved with the Liverpool universities, with staff delivering lectures and providing year in industry placements. Working with local schools we are also able to host pupils from a range of backgrounds, providing them with a taste of what a career in engineering could involve, helping them to make informed decisions when choosing GCSE or A Level subjects.

In June, we joined forces with the Engineering College to support International Women in Engineering Day 2019. A group of 10 girls from schools and colleges in Birkenhead and surrounding areas met female engineers, toured polar research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough and heard how an engineering apprenticeship can provide people with a huge range of career opportunities.

Promoting equality and seeking diversity is essential to the future success of Cammell Laird. We need the right kind of talent in the business – people with passion and loyalty, who are confident and willing to learn, who are going to go on our growth journey with us.
