Cammell Laird named Business of the Year at Wirral Business Awards
Cammell Laird’s contribution to the Merseyside economy and wider maritime industry has been recognised at a prestigious regional business awards ceremony.
Cammell Laird was crowned Business of the Year (50+ employees) at the 2013 Wirral Business Awards, the business friendly council area where it has been based for nearly 200 years.
The judges paid tribute to Cammell Laird’s success emphasizing the tens of millions of pounds it pumps into the economy each year.
Presenting a team from Cammell Laird with the award, in front of 450 people, at a gala dinner at Birkenhead School, BBC Radio Merseyside, presenter and host, Roger Phillips told the audience:
“Cammell Laird is a one of the world’s best known engineering powerbrands. The company has enjoyed a tremendous year with sales, employees and man hours sold reaching great heights.
Employing more than 1,000 people directly and indirectly, including 64 apprentices, the company has contributed between £30m and £50m a year to the Wirral and wider North West economy over the last three years. And with turnover, which has steadily built from £9m in 2001, expected to push through £120m in 2013, there remains huge potential for growth.
In fact the company is exploring ways to use its infrastructure, skills and expertise to diversify into other areas of engineering. It is targeting growth across the marine, offshore renewables, civil nuclear and oil and gas sectors.
These are massive multi billion pound markets over the next 30 years. Few competitors exist which have the workforce and facilities to service the needs of these sectors. This thrusts Cammell Laird to its rightful place, as an engineering innovator, at the very forefront of UK industry.”
Cammell Laird’s award was sponsored by Lloyds TSB.
The award follows a series of major accolades for the business in the last 18 months. In June Cammell Laird CEO John Syvret was named Business Person of the Year at the Liverpool Post North West Business Awards. He was also named Business Leader of the Year in December 2012 again by the Liverpool Post. Meanwhile, in January 2012 Mr Syvret was made a CBE, in the Queen’s New Year Honours list, for services to the maritime industry.
