Cammell Laird is celebrating being a finalist in the prestigious 2014 Lloyd’s List Global Awards and winning two regional accolades at the Wirral Business Awards.

The Birkenhead engineering and marine services firm was among global shipping industry leaders who gathered in London for the annual awards organised by Lloyd’s List newspaper.

Over 500 professionals attended the celebration at London’s Lancaster Hotel on September 30 to recognise innovation and enterprise in the world’s ever-changing maritime sector.

Cammell Laird was a finalist in the Company of the Year category. Firms had to show how they were best able to innovate and adapt. Other finalists included Costamare, Maersk Line, the Navios group of companies, Safe Bulkers, United Arab Shipping Company and Yildirim Group.

Richard Meade, Editor of Lloyd’s List, told guests: “These awards are a reminder of the importance of this industry to both commerce and social good. We also see it as an annual chance to thank you, the upholders of the best in this industry, for your contribution.”

Cammell Laird is also celebrating regional successes after winning two honours at this year’s Wirral Business Awards, organised by Wirral Chamber of Commerce. It received the People Development Award and the Think Big Award

The People Development Award, sponsored by Wirral Metropolitan College, required firms to demonstrate commitment to staff training and development including apprenticeships. Companies also had to show how this improved their overall performance.

Cammell Laird highlighted its range of investment in its own staff and also its work with other firms across the maritime, engineering and energy sectors. It also promotes engineering and other business skills in schools, colleges and universities.

The second accolade, the Think Big Award sponsored by Wirral Council, was given to Cammell Laird for ‘standing out’ from all others through investment and promotion of its own business and also of Wirral as an area for business.

Paula Basnett, Chief Executive of Wirral Chamber of Commerce, said:Cammell Laird is a world-renowned name. It has enjoyed substantial growth and contributed greatly to the prosperity of the regional economy.  It places great emphasis on staff training and has been a leading organisation in developing a robust apprenticeship programme enabling many to make the move into full-time employment.”
